Welcome back to a new semester! We’re excited to have you on campus and hope you’re ready for a great start. As we settle in, we want to remind everyone that several viruses are currently spreading, including the Flu, COVID-19, RSV, Norovirus, and hMPV. Your health is important, and taking precautions can help keep our campus community safe.

What You Need to Know About These Viruses:

  • Influenza (Flu): Causes fever, chills, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Spreads through coughs, sneezes, and contaminated surfaces. A flu shot can help prevent it.
  • COVID-19: Symptoms vary but often include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and loss of taste/smell. It spreads through respiratory droplets and airborne particles. Vaccination, handwashing, and masking help reduce risk.
  • RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): Common cold-like symptoms but can be severe in infants, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Spreads through close contact and contaminated surfaces.
  • Norovirus: A stomach virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Highly contagious through contaminated food, water, and surfaces. Currently, this is very prevalent in the U.S. Can spread through fecal matter for 2 weeks after being sick. Frequent handwashing is key to prevention.
  • hMPV (Human Metapneumovirus): Causes respiratory illness similar to RSV, with symptoms like cough, fever, and congestion. Spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated hands.

How to Protect Yourself & Others:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  • Stay home if you’re sick and allow yourself time to recover.
  • If you are returning to campus after being sick, please wear a mask for 3-5 days to help prevent spreading illness.

If You’re Sick, Please Let Us Know:

If you are experiencing symptoms of any of these viruses, notify your instructors and me at tgetz@DACC.nmsu.edu so we can provide support and guidance.

Lastly, a reminder that Health and Wellness is here for all your mental and physical health needs. If you need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.
