College Launches Student-Run Newspaper

October 28th, 2026

Students at Doña Ana Community College (DACC) have officially launched their very own digital student-run newspaper.

The paper, called The Student Pulse, contains news articles about the college and our community. The articles are gathered and written by student reporters. There are currently three reporters on staff with plans to include more in the spring semester. The paper can be viewed here: DACC Student Pulse.

The student-run media is part of a $77,000 grant the college received to enhance journalism and report on areas such as the south county, which are often underrepresented. The grant provided funding for student internships with local news outlets at Organ Mountain News, KRWG-TV, News 22, and KRWG-FM.

The grant also funds a student podcast called DACC Talks, which features news and interviews on events at the college. "These platforms are important to news storytelling and allowing students an opportunity to report on matters that affect our community, " says Denise LaFrance-Ojinaga, DACC public information officer and editor of the student-run news program. "The plan is to continue growing with reporters and stories, allowing our reporters an opportunity to gain skills and experience as a journalist and a pathway to continue their education onto a four-year university like NMSU."

In addition, DACC has partnered with NMSU to create an informal journalism club for incoming, current and former journalists in and around southern New Mexico. The club is an opportunity for attendees to share ideas, collaborate, and discuss journalism in our region.
