A recently completed STEM-H Showcase held at the Espina campus of the Doña Ana Community College (DACC) introduced science, technology, engineering, math, and health activities to more than 280 high school students from throughout the Las Cruces Public School District.
“This event was a huge success, a standing-room only crowd of local high school, DACC, and NMSU students,” said Dave Burleson DACC Dean of the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Division. “The students were impressed with the range of speakers, workshops, and display tables and left with a clear impression of the value of a STEM education and DACC’s commitment to support them.”
STEM-H education and training introduces students to fields that experience higher job growth, wages and increased employment rates in New Mexico.
The showcase was highlighted in classroom and laboratory activities, in robotics, health careers, virtual reality, and electronics. The event was engaging, featuring hands-on science and engineering activities that provided students an opportunity to explore a variety of STEM careers. “This is a great collaborative learning experience,” said Rajaa Shindi, event coordinator and DACC iPASS/STEM grant lead. “The event increased awareness of STEM academic and career pathways.”
There was a collaboration between partners promoting STEM careers for students exploring options at the community college including; DACC, NMSU College of Education, NMSU Physical Science Laboratory, NMSU College of Arts and Sciences, NMSU College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Science, NMSU College of Engineering as well as other STEM outreach and industry partners.
