Butler Heads Up New Division

Dr. Monica Torres, Vice President of Academic Affairs, has appointed Joe Butler as the Dean of the recently created Science, Engineering and Mathematics Division (SEM) at Doña Ana Community College (DACC).

Butler has more than 27 years of experience teaching mathematics at community colleges and universities in Texas including Baylor University, the University of North Texas as well as Collin College, Cisco College and Panola College.

“Joe is a great addition to DACC,” Torres said. “He brings a wealth of experience in instruction and administration which will serve our students well and contribute to the success of this new division.” Torres also noted, “David Burleson has worked tirelessly as the interim head of this division since its creation and we thank him for his service.”

Butler attended the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and Angelo State University before earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of North Texas. In 1992, he attained a Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of North Texas.

He has presented at 10 conferences on a variety of subjects including dual credit, distance learning, accreditation and university partnerships. His community service ranges from helping at food banks, to building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and community beautification efforts.

The new SEM division includes several departments including engineering and manufacturing technology, sciences and mathematics.

“With more jobs in New Mexico calling for certificates in these disciplines, these departments are helping move the Doña Ana County workforce forward,” said Butler. “I look forward to working with our faculty, students and staff at DACC and working with New Mexico State University to build more pathways and 2 plus 2 programs for our students.”
