DOWNLOAD THE STUDENT QUICKSTART GUIDE

To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won’t be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.) For additional details on using LockDown Browser, review this Student Quick Start Guide (PDF)[NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: INSERT YOUR INSTITUTION’S DOWNLOAD URL HERE, IF APPLICABLE]Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

Select an Interruption-Free Location: Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed during the test.

Manage Your Time: Before you begin the test, ensure you know how much time is available for it and that you've allocated enough time to complete all the questions.

Eliminate Distractions: Turn off all mobile devices, including phones, and keep them out of arm's reach to maintain focus.

Clear Your Workspace: Remove all external materials such as books, papers, other computers, or devices from your workspace to prevent any potential distractions.

Stay Put: Remain at your desk or workstation for the entire test duration to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

Consider Webcam Use: When setting up your test, be mindful that not all students may have webcams, so it's not necessary to require webcam usage to ensure compatibility.
By following this checklist, you can create an ideal environment for a successful test-taking experience.

Why a practice exam is important

Ensure your first exam using LDB runs smoothly! Have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LDB, before the graded exam occurs. Leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer.

FAQ’s

What does the LDB do?

Some exams require that you use the LDB. When using the LDB, you will be unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, you will be locked in until it is submitted for grading.

Watch this brief video to learn more about LDB.

What kind of Internet connection do I need?

We strongly recommend using an Ethernet (wired) Internet connection while taking your exam in LDB. If you lose your Internet connection during the exam, it will lock up the browser and not allow you to save answers, move on to other questions, submit or exit the exam.

How do I install the LDB?

Download   NMSU’s installer for Respondus Lockdown Browser . Read over the information provided for your selection and click the Download Installer link. When the File Download Installer dialog box opens, select Run to open the LDB Installer. Click the Install button to install LDB to your computer’s desktop.

Then you’ll need to select the operating system on which LDB will be installed: If you are using a computer that uses Windows, click the Windows icon. If you are using a Macintosh computer, click the Mac icon.

Then select the option that best fits your situation:

Lab Computer — If you are using a lab computer on an NMSU campus, please contact the Lab Administrator to assist you with this installation.

Your Own Computer — Select this option if you are installing this software on your own computer or one that you are borrowing from family or friends.

Work Computer — If you are using a computer at work, you   MAY need to contact the system administrator  for assistance.

I’m having trouble with the installation. What do I do?

In order to install LDB, you will need to have administrative privileges. Also be aware that if you are installing this software on a work-related machine, there may be software that is pre-installed on the system that may interfere with LDB. If you begin having problems when using a work-related machine, try using a non-work computer and see if you continue to have problems.

In addition, antivirus programs can interfere with the download and installation process. You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus software in order to complete the LDB installation.

How do I take an Exam in LDB?

  1. Close all open programs or applications.
  2. Open the LDB by clicking the icon on your computer’s desktop.
  3. Log in to  Canvas  normally.
  4. Go to the course which has the exam you want to take.
  5. Take the test and submit it as you would normally.
  6. Log-out and close LDB.

Do I have to close other programs and windows for LDB to work?

You may be prompted to close any programs or windows that are still open. Select the option to close these programs from the prompts that appear. Sometimes the LDB will be unable to close an application. You will need to manually close these applications before you can proceed.
