Patricio G. Quintana served as the second president of Doña Ana Community College, from 1978 to 1988. Dr. Quintana’s background in adult basic education was useful as DACC expanded its role by serving the outlying communities in the county in adult basic education, English as a second language, high school equivalency and citizenship training. The immigration amnesty program of the federal government in the late 1980’s accounted for a huge increase in the number of clients seeking adult education in order to qualify for citizenship. In 1985 and again in 1992, the program was named one of the top ten in the nation by the U.S. Department of Education. Many new vocational programs were also added during Quintana’s term as campus director. Dr. Quintana also served NMSU as director of Chicano Affairs and EEO Officer prior to his appointment as campus director.
