Online Learning Environment

Students at DACC learn from expert instructors in small classes where individual attention is highly valued.  DACC offers online courses through Canvas, our learning management system. All online instructors must complete training to learn how to use Canvas before they can teach online.

Quality Matters LogoQuality Assurance: DACC’s Online Teaching and Learning Initiative

In Fall 2012, DACC identified the need to improve the quality of online teaching and learning and began taking sustainable steps to establish a culture of equity, innovation, and quality. In order to improve the quality of online and blended (hybrid) courses offered at DACC, Virtual Learning and Instructional Technology (VLIT) established an online teaching and learning initiative in addition to the traditional Learning Management System training VLIT traditionally provided to students and faculty.  The online teaching and learning initiative included:

  • Release time for a faculty member to serve as the Online Education Coordinator.
  • Subscribing to the Quality Matters Program and developing a QM Implementation Plan.
  • Increasing online teaching and learning professional development for faculty to include: First Thursday’s Faculty-led Best Practice Workshops, semi-Annual Book club, In-House Faculty Developed QM Workshops, The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) training.
  • Campus wide assessment of online teaching and learning including: annual student survey, annual faculty survey, bi-annual focus groups.
  • Collaborating with student advising and orientations to increase student readiness for online and blended (hybrid) courses.
  • Increasing online teaching and learning professional development for faculty to include: First Thursday’s Faculty-led Best Practice Workshops, semi-Annual Book Club, In-House Faculty Developed QM Workshops, and The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) training.
