According to a recent national study that compared College Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) programs, Doña Ana Community College’s (DACC) program is the best value in the state of New Mexico.
Air Filters Delivered, who did the research, based the rankings on several criteria including:
- Was an associate degree offered for successful graduates and upon completion, were there transfer options to pursue a bachelor degree;
- What was the cost of attendance based on IPEDS and College Scorecard information on in-state and out-of-state tuition;
- What was the six-year post-enrollment average salary, as graduates from some schools have a higher average salary; and
- What is the median salary for HVAC technicians in the state.
From that data, the researcher assigned a rank and then averaged the scores to form a final list.
“Our program is very affordable and those who complete the requirements for the associate degree will enjoy a very good career in the business,” said Edward Lopez, Associate Professor for the HVAC and Refrigeration program.
According to this study and others including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, projections of growth during the next seven years for HVAC/R will increase by 15%. The supply of qualified, trained people has not kept pace with the demand, and new opportunities are constantly developing. After earning HVAC/R certificates in as little as three semesters, students can seek employment in the industry while finishing work on their associate degree.
The HVAC/R program at DACC uses training facilities equipped with the most modern test equipment and tools available. The program features high tech applications as part of the DACC iPad initiative. Apps from HVAC/R manufacturers help students use the most modern applications in the industry to monitor and diagnose system issues.
