Happy Smiles Serves Children in the Community

The Doña Ana Community College (DACC) Dental Program is pleased to continue an event improving oral hygiene for children who have no dental insurance and limited resources.

Students and faculty from the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Programs are inviting children and adolescents’ ages 2 – 17 years-old to schedule an appointment to receive a free dental cleaning, radiographs, fluoride and oral hygiene instruction.

This event is by appointment only. Please call the DACC Dental Clinic at (575) 528-7019 to reserve an appointment. A parent or legal guardian must be present with any minor receiving services. No treatment will be provided to those without a parent or legal guardian with them.

The Happy Smiles free dental clinic will take place at the DACC Espina Campus, 3400 South Espina Blvd., Alex Sanchez Hall, room 80 on Tuesday, February 19 and Wednesday, February 20 from 8 am – noon and 1pm – 4 pm.

Elmer Gonzalez, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program looks forward to this year’s event. “This is an incredible opportunity for our students, under the guidance of dentists and dental professionals to provide free preventive services to children in need.”

According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic conditions of children in the U.S. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning. CDC researchers have found evidence of plaque and tooth decay leading to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and premature, low-weight births.

In addition to the free dental services, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico will provide a free glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screening from 9 am to 2 pm on February 19 near the Library at the Espina campus. Again, please RSVP to (575) 528-7071.
