After finishing their final exams, fifteen Doña Ana Community College (DACC) students including two dual credit students will have to refocus on their technical specialties for a national competition.
DACC’s fifteen state gold medalists will join the 6,500 students from across the nation who qualified to compete at nationals by winning their state competitions at the SkillsUSA competition. The national event will be held June 24-29 in Louisville, Kentucky where students will compete in 103 different trade, technical and leadership fields.
“We are proud of our students who will represent us at nationals,” said Saundra Castillo, DACC Division Dean of Advanced Technologies. “The state and the national competitions are important for our students to develop their leadership skills and test their technical knowledge and competency.”
The DACC team more than doubled their state gold medal count from 2018 bringing 16 medals home including in related technical math which is part of the new building construction technology degree and in cybersecurity, which both will be offered as an Associate of Science degree option this fall.
“Because the competition is in Louisville it is expensive for our students to attend,” Castillo said. “The DACC gold medalists have started a crowd funding site at NMSU’s Make a Statement with the help of the NMSU Foundation to help defray expenses for the trip. The site will close on May 23 so any donation is very much appreciated and will help our students make it to Louisville.” To donate go to: https://mas.nmsu.edu/
