Dr. Alex A. Sanchez has a long and distinguished career in higher education. He officially retired in 2013 from Oregon State University where he was a professor in the Community College Leadership Program for fifteen years. He served as the major professor and mentor to a large number of doctoral students, most of whom have assumed positions of leadership in community colleges around the country. He continues to volunteer as a mentor to students who are in the dissertation phase of this program.
Previous positions include serving as President of Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, NM, President of Rio Hondo College in Whittier, CA, Vice President for Community and International Programs at the University of New Mexico, and Academic Dean at New Mexico Military Institute.
His passion for community colleges began in his thirties when he started the Doña Ana Community College in Las Cruces, NM. He describes that endeavor as one of the most interesting, fun, and satisfying experiences of his varied career.
Dr. Sanchez retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Colonel after serving at the Air Force Academy, the Air War College, and Headquarters of the US Air Force in the Pentagon. He has also served on numerous community, university, and non-profits boards at national, state and local levels.
Alex and his wife Elaine live in Salem, OR. Between them, they have 8 children and 9 grandchildren. In their spare time, they love to travel and hike.
