Kids College

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Summer 2020 Kids College will not be scheduled. Have a safe summer!

The DACC Workforce Development and Career Readiness (WDCR) department is offering Summer Break College and Career STEAM camps for kids 10 – 15 years old.

Camps will have hands-on activities exploring STEAM careers connected to majors and programs offered by Doña Ana Community College.  

Camps are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am -12 pm or 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm, with all day options available.  The camps will be held at the DACC Workforce Center at 2345 Nevada in Las Cruces.  The tuition is $80 and includes materials.

Early drop-off, late pick-up, and lunch monitoring is available for an additional $25 per week.

Morning Camps

Students will learn about the tools, layout, and use of Adobe® Photoshop.  This introductory course will focus on creativity and how to bring that creativity to life on the computer screen.  Learning to use and create brushes, combine photos to create a new creature, and “photoshopping” themselves into a scene of their choice.  Each student will go home with written instructions and list of products, both Fee based and Free, that they can use to continue to create.

This camp is for students that have taken Intro to Photoshop, or already have some experience with Photoshop. Students will learn advanced techniques to create projects of their own.

This course is designed as an introductory exploration of the Adobe® Illustrator program.  Your child will be taught about the tools and uses of this very versatile computer graphic program.  Projects will range from simple practice with each tool to completed characters that can be printed, imported and reproduced long after the class is over.  Each student will go home with written instructions and list of products both Fee based and Free, they that they can use to continue to create.

This course is designed for those students that have a basic knowledge of the Adobe® Illustrator and those students that participated in the previous years' introductory class.  This class will focus on using Illustrator to prepare more complex designs. Using masks, learning to manage layers, and reproducing realism in the digital world.  This course will also cover import and export of each design and using them in other programs such and Adobe® InDesign and Photoshop, as well as Microsoft® Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Using these tools to work towards a final presentation of each students understand and skills Each student will go home with written instructions and list of products both Fee based and Free, that they can use to continue to create.

Students will learn how to import pictures and create text using Aspire software to create a unique design project.

After learning the basics, students will be given a puzzle template to create and design their own personalized puzzle. They will then be able to set up the materials in a laser cutter and engrave their design into the puzzle, and cut out the pieces. They will then finish their project by learning how to hand sand and applying a clear coat.

Aspire lets you transform 2D sketches, photos & digital artwork in to detailed 3D models. Aspire’s unique 3D modeling tools coupled with the comprehensive set of 2D design and editing tools make it easy to create your own 2D and 3D parts from scratch as well as the ability to import and edit external 2D and 3D data.

Afternoon Camps

Police, Firefighters, EMTs are all First Responders when there’s trouble.  This camp introduces you to the skills and work of these safety professionals.  Also, the camp has three days of CPR Certification and the basics of First Aid.  This camp is excellent for big brothers and sisters, babysitters, and kids interested in the medical and safety fields.

This course is designed as an introduction to the world of art.  We will explore several different types of art and mediums.  These include printmaking, sketching, pastels, watercolors, and others.  This is a great course for your budding artist. Each student will receive a complete kit with instructions and materials to complete each project in class.  There will also be additional kits available for purchase for continued work at home.

This advanced course will introduce your artist to the world of crafting and acrylic painting.  Students will learn wire wrapping, paracord and macramé, bead making, and Pointillism painting. These skills will used to produce a focal piece that can be used as a necklace, bracelet, or key chain, a paracord keychain or bracelet, beads to use in each project, and two completed Pointillism inspired painting projects.  Each student will receive a complete kit with instructions and materials to complete each project in class.  There will also be additional kits available for purchase for continued work at home.
