Sims to Speak on Domestic Violence

Christy Sims, a nationally recognized advocate against domestic violence and the survivor of a horrendous domestic violence attack will share her story with our community this April 11 – 12. The Atlanta native’s former boyfriend threw sulfuric acid on her, burning 20% of her body, including her face, neck, chest and arms.

She underwent 13 different surgeries and was in an induced coma for two months after the attack. Sims, a nationally certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor is slated to speak to students and the community in several venues over two days beginning on Wednesday, April 11 at the Doña Ana Community College (DACC) Sunland Park auditorium. Her appearances are sponsored by the DACC Student Government Association.

According to data from the New Mexico Department of Health Incidence and Nature of Domestic Violence in New Mexico report, in 2016, there were 19,746 domestic violence incidents reported statewide to law enforcement agencies, an 11% increase from those reported in 2015 (17,757).

The 2016 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey found that 1 in 4 women in the U.S. has experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime and 1 in 7 men experienced similar physical violence.

DACC Student Government President Carlos Cuesta thinks Ms. Sims story needs to be heard. “Ms. Simms has been through a terrible ordeal, but she has remained dedicated to supporting and advocating for other survivors of domestic violence,” he said. “Her story is inspirational and illustrates the need to discuss and stop domestic violence.”
