Meet your instructor...

Hello everyone! My name is Gemma Nicholson.  I am originally from the wonderful Caribbean region; born on the Island of Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. I speak French, English, Spanish, and get by with the little Italian I know.

I attended the University of the Virgin Islands, then went on to obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business with a major concentration in Hotel/Restaurant Management from The University of Maryland.  From there, I obtained a Master in Tourism Administration from The George Washington University in Washington D.C.

I have over 25 years of hospitality industry experience from owning my own restaurant franchise in Atlanta, Georgia to being a mystery shopper in hotels such as the Ritz Carlton along with all sorts of different restaurant operations. I served seven and half years in the US Army as an Army cook and left the service at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

My interests are many, but I particularly enjoy sporting events, (basketball in particular).  I love to travel!  I have traveled and visited over 28 different countries; at times experiencing tourism and hospitality at its best and, yes, at times at its worst.

I have two wonderful children; Felicia age 24 and Carlos 22 both live in Marietta, Georgia where they work and attend college.

Please feel free to reach me at gnich@nmsu.edu if you have additional questions of me or of the hospitality program.

Hospitality is an interesting and rewarding career. Job opportunities are readily available, advancement is fast, and the pay is competitive with other career fields.
