Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County

Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County, an independent 501 (c) 3 organization nationally accredited by ProLiteracy America, is a volunteer tutoring program that provides a component of the Adult  Education Division of Doña Ana Community College. We provide FREE one-to-one or small group tutoring for adults in basic reading, writing, math, and/or English as a Second Language (ESL).

Responding to our Community Needs

In 1984, Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County (LV-DAC) was founded as a community response to local needs. Our non-profit organization utilizes trained volunteers to provide FREE one-to-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, math, or English language skills.

LV-DAC works closely with Adult Basic Education and offers tutoring for adults who have literacy skills at the most basic levels. We give preference to the least educated. Instruction is individualized and based on the real-life needs of learners. LV-DAC has tutoring sites throughout Doña Ana County, and our services are FREE to both the learners and the volunteers.

LV-DAC is funded in part by grants from Adult Basic Education of DACC, foundations, and local businesses. The rest of our funding comes from concerned individuals. If you can make a donation, please contact our Literacy Program Coordinator, Steve DeGiulio: 575.527.7641, or go to

Who Do We Serve?

Our program primarily serves adult learners who speak English but read and write at less than the sixth grade level, and ESL learners who have less than six years of formal education in their home country. In this way we serve all the residents of Doña Ana County by increasing the productivity and education of the workforce.

Students who come to LV-DAC are pre-assessed to determine their level. LV-DAC matches eligible adult learners with trained volunteer literacy tutors. A learner will generally meet her/his tutor for 2-3 hours a week, and together they work on the educational goals that the learner has identified. Sometimes 3-5 learners will work together with their volunteer tutor.

Our tutoring services are free and learner information is kept confidential. If you know a low literacy adult who needs help learning basic reading, writing, English, or math, please call (575) 527-7544 or stop by the Quintana Learning Center at DACC.
